What is Low Level Laser Therapy?

LLLT is a technology employed to combat thinning hair and scalp disorders. It is effective on both men and women. Low Level Laser treatment focuses low level laser light energy to target areas (thinning, balding or weak hair areas), stimulating the body's natural ability to heal itself.

LLLT was first found to be effective on hair growth in 1964, when Professor Andre Mester began experimenting with the use of low level laser energy in Budapest, Hungary. He observed that low level laser exposure had a stimulating effect on the biological system, while high-level laser treatment had an inhibiting effect. Experimenting with wound treatment on mice, he noticed rapid healing due to microcirculation of blood supply. This healing effect was also obvious in laser light treatment on diabetic sores. He was amazed to find that diabetic sores that would not heal before exposure to low level laser energy would heal afterwards. He also noted accelerated hair growth and thickening hair in treated areas.

Low level laser therapy, or photobiostimulation, has been used clinically for numerous ailments in Europe for over 30 years. There are no reported side effects to the therapy, which is painless, non-toxic and may complement many traditional therapies. LLLT is currently undergoing FDA trials in the United States to prove stoppage of hair loss and regrowth of hair. Canada's equivalent of the FDA has approved a laser company to state that it STOPS HAIR LOSS and RE-GROWS hair.

Today, LLLT is touted as a breakthrough technology for hair loss treatment and has been featured on several national news broadcasts. A low level laser device used to stop hair loss and to re-grow hair was recently named one of TIME magazine's inventions of the year.

How does Laser Therapy work?

Laser light uses the scientific principle of photo biotherapy. This process occurs when cells absorb light and repair themselves. Laser light penetrates deep into the tissues of the scalp, stimulating micro-circulation of blood supply, cell metabolism and protein synthesizes. Clinical studies suggest that this cellular and sub-cellular activity breaks down the collection of DHT helping to stop hair loss.

Many long-term international clinical research programs have shown that bio-stimulation of 'cold-beam' low-level laser gives numerous positive effects to the skin and hair. Research suggests that laser works by three mechanisms:

  • Energization - Transforming laser energy into cellular energy. Laser light increases the energy available to cells so they take in nutrients faster and get rid of waste products. Not surprisingly, many scientists and physicians have been using low level laser over the past 30 years to speed wound healing and produce new tissue.
  • Circulation - Increasing blood and lymph circulation through vasodilatation. Microscopic studies have shown laser increases circulation and oxygenation of the blood to the scalp and hair bulb. Laser also removes calcification and blockages around the hair bulb; as well as increases cell replacement or regenerative activity. Laser helps hair to improve in fullness, shine, body and elasticity; therefore problems such as excessively oily or dry scalp, dandruff and itchiness can also be reduced.
  • Vibration - Bringing cells into harmonious oscillation patterns. The soft tissue and fluids in our bodies actually vibrate! They do this within a frequency range similar to that of cold-beam, red-light laser. When its vibrations become irregular or out-of-step, it can be brought back into "synchronization" by being irradiated with low level laser working at quantum level.

Yes! A double blind placebo controlled study was conducted to evaluate the effect of laser light therapy by comparing it with a placebo laser. Here are the results:

  • All patients with the exception of one in the laser treated group showed a complete stop of hair loss.
  • All patients, except three, showed a clear re-growth of hair with a reduction of at least one category in the Hamilton Classification.
  • Out of 18 patients, 14 showed an increase in hair thickness and all 18 showed improvement in the general hair shaft quality. The results showed no improvement in the placebo group or any adverse effect of the treatment.

What Type of Results Can I Expect?

An independent 2003 LLLT study, published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Surgery and Aesthetic Dermatology (Volume 5, Number 2, 2003 [John L. Satino and Michael Markou, D.O.]), supports that hair count in men and women increased up to 93.5% on average and hair tensile (strength) increased 78.9% while being treated with LLLT. 35 patients were involved in the six-month study that included 28 men and 7 women.

In 2003, Dr. Glenn Charles, D.O. of in Boca Raton, Florida, completed a 10-subject clinical study on the effects of LLLT and its effects on hair loss and post surgery healing with hair transplant patients.

He concluded that the mean hair count of the test subjects increased 55.4% at the six-month period of the study with some subjects experiencing as much as a 96% hair count increase. Additionally, he concluded that post surgery hair transplant patients experienced reduced shock loss (telogen-effluvium) of transplanted hair as well as existing hairs and faster hair re-growth. The majority of patients also experienced a significant reduction in postoperative redness, discomfort and irritation from the surgery.
